Miles put his phone on silent and turned it over so he wouldn’t see who was calling. His phone had been going off quite a bit today. He had taken another day off of work, and one would think his coworkers would be able to survive without him, but apparently not. He’d been getting one call after another all morning about silly things that shouldn’t require his expertise. So he was done. No more answering the calls. Jade needed him.

He had taken the day off yesterday, obviously to be with Jade after she was attacked. This morning, he had called into work and said he wouldn’t be making it in today either. Because Jade needed him.

Just thinking those three words sent goose bumps up his arms.

Last night, after the sweetest kiss he ever experienced, Jade had asked if he’d do his computer thing and find her some more evidence. And when Jade wanted something, he couldn’t refuse.

The night hadn’t turned awkward after the kiss, but it also didn’t extend into anything else. A part of him was disappointed, wanting to explore so much more with her. A part of him had been relieved. Because relationships weren’t his forte and he didn’t know where to go from here. Sure, they kissed—a kiss that he never saw coming until her lips met his—but maybe it had been a friendly, thanks-for-your-concern kind of kiss. He didn’t know. Especially when right after, she went into work mode, asking for his help.

He left shortly after, promising her he’d find all kinds of dirt on her three suspects. Perhaps if he continued to find the evidence she needed, she’d keep kissing him in thanks. He’d take whatever he could get. Although, as each minute passed with her, the more and more he wanted.

So much more.

Leaving her last night had been hard. Not because he wanted to keep kissing her and find out what kind of relationship they had—maybe more than friends—but because he was worried about her.

Jade reassured him several times she’d be fine and not to worry. Of course, that didn’t mean he didn’t worry. Oh, he barely slept last night with the amount of anxiety that tingled in his veins. He had paced in his bedroom for a long time, questioning his decision to leave her alone. He couldn’t even remember the number of times he looked out his window to her house to make sure everything looked okay. He never saw anything odd. But that didn’t mean anything. This killer was good.

With only a few hours of sleep, his eyes raw and tired, he made a pot of coffee before the sun even came up and started working. He had to find anything and everything to help Jade solve this case. Because as soon as this case was closed, maybe—just maybe—he could pursue a relationship with her.

She kissed him.

It had to have been more than simply a friendly kiss. She had never done anything like that before.

So, yeah. He had to help her solve this case soon so he could figure out what was going on between them.
